Headteacher’s Welcome

Welcome to our very special school! This website has been prepared to give you a flavour of what goes on in Ty Gwyn. Whilst there is a lot of valuable information it cannot convey the full picture. For example, everyone who visits the school comments on the really friendly atmosphere and the excellent relationships that exist between the staff and pupils. I would be delighted to show you around our school so that you can see first hand the sort of work that the pupils are involved in.

Perhaps it would be useful if I gave you some basic information. Firstly, we moved into our wonderful new building on Monday 27 September 2010 and Ruth Jones officially opened the school on Wednesday 10 November. It is a magnificent ‘state of the art’ facility that is over three times the size of the previous school. It is packed with specialised equipment, resources and design features that I will outline a little later on.

Ty Gwyn is a local authority day special school located in the Ely area of Cardiff. We cater for children and young people aged 3 – 19 years who have profound and multiple learning difficulties. Additionally, some of our pupils are on the autistic spectrum and present with severe challenging behaviour. Our catchment area comprises the City & County of Cardiff and the surrounding Local Authorities in South East Wales.

Currently we have 108 pupils on roll, taught in 16 class groups including our three nursery classes. Our capacity has been increased to 150 pupils. All pupils have a Statement of Special Educational Needs or are in the process of having their needs assessed. Our adult/pupil ratios are very high to ensure that individual care and educational needs can be met – a typical class would have 1 teacher and 3 teaching assistants for 8 pupils. However, a few pupils who have the most complex needs are supported on a 1:1 basis. The class - based staff are supported by our nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech & language therapy staff teams. We also benefit from input by the LEA’s sensory impairment team and advice from educational psychologists.

The new building has first class information & communication technology, ICT, facilities. All classrooms have internet access and either interactive whiteboards or large plasma touchscreen units. A newly established Assistive Technology Centre is able to provide support for pupils, staff and parents to ensure that the best solutions are developed and implemented.

All classrooms have a withdrawal room and direct access to their own dedicated hygiene areas. These features ensure that time away from the classroom is kept to an absolute minimum. Also, every classroom has direct access to our outdoor play areas which are equipped with a wide range of apparatus. The very latest sensory equipment is also installed in every classroom.

Our hydrotherapy and splash pools are magnificent. It’s wonderful to see the pupils’ faces when they are in either of the pools – pure joy!

Other whole school facilities include sensory & touch therapy rooms, a large soft play area, indoor & outdoor sensory gardens, rebound therapy room, sensory integration equipment and a magnificent hall that is also equipped with sensory resources. We also have specialist rooms for art & ceramics, food technology and music.

The school’s coffee shop, Choices, is run by our post-16 students every Friday morning. It is an extremely valuable learning opportunity which benefits everyone in our community.

There is so much more I could say about the new school but, as I said at the beginning, there is no substitute for visiting us. Please come and see what we have to offer – you will be made very welcome and I guarantee that you will be impressed by what you see.
